Jail inmates on Sunday staged violent protests and arson in Uttar Pradesh’s Fatehgarh district jail over the death of an inmate, in which 23 jail staff and policemen were injured and one prisoner died. Eight more jail inmates were also injured.

According to the police, the jail inmates created a ruckus while serving morning tea. The prisoners also briefly detained a deputy jailer.

SP Ashok Kumar Meena said that the fire brigade had to be called after the prisoners started arson and heavy police force has been deployed to keep the situation under control. DIG, Jail (Kanpur), VK Tripathi said the situation was brought under control after one and a half hours.

Police said the jail inmates were protesting the death of murder accused Sandeep Yadav. They allege that Yadav died due to the negligence of the jail personnel. Police, however, said that Yadav was recently admitted to Saifai PGI Hospital after contracting dengue. Yadav died during treatment on Saturday.
