The Archbishop of Canterbury will use his Christmas Sermon to deliver a message of support to volunteers helping refugees.

He will also say that the human capacity to show ‘great kindness’ is ‘no doubt’ and that the volunteers working to welcome refugees to the beaches close to Canterbury Cathedral are ‘wonderful people’.

Mr Welby is expected to praise rescuers such as the RNLI and the crew of the Border Patrol Cutter in his sermon.

He is also expected to pay tribute to those who volunteered at the food banks during the festive period.

Mr Welby is expected to reflect on the way the pandemic experience has forced people to confront their ‘fragility’ like never before.

‘We all face the uncertainty, uncontrollability and unpredictability that each and every one of us, from the sage and the cabinet, to the big companies to the people who are sleeping, is expected.

The sermon will be available to live stream from the website of Canterbury Cathedral and the final text of the sermon will be published on the Archbishop of Canterbury’s website shortly after its distribution.

Mr Welby recently framed vaccination as an ethical issue in the pandemic, and said that getting the jab reduces the chances of spreading disease.

He said, ‘It’s not about me and my rights to choose – it’s about how I love my neighbor’.

He said the 95-year-old Queen, who canceled the traditional pre-Christmas lunch with her extended family and will spend Christmas Day at Windsor instead of Sandringham, had set an “example to follow”.

Mr Welby told ITV News at Ten he was ‘real disappointed and sad’ when he saw Downing Street employees eating cheese and drinking in the number 10 garden during the first lockdown.
