Afghan agents pour 3,000 liters of liquor into the Kabul canal amid the crackdown

A team of Afghan intelligence agents poured nearly 3,000 liters of alcohol into a canal in Kabul, the country’s spy agency has said, as new Taliban officials crack down on alcohol sales.

Video footage released by the Directorate General of Intelligence shows that during raids in the capital, its agents confiscated the liquor kept in barrels while pouring it into the canal.

“Muslims should seriously refrain from making and giving liquor,” said a religious scholar in a video posted by the agency on Twitter.

It is not clear when the raids were conducted or exactly when the liquor was destroyed, but a statement released by the agency on Sunday said three dealers were arrested during the operation.

The sale and consumption of alcohol was also banned under the previous Western-backed regime, but the Taliban, known for its fanatical brand of Islam, is vehemently opposed to it.

Since the time Islamists seized power on August 15, the frequency of raids, including for drug addicts, has increased across the country.

The Taliban government’s Ministry for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Evil has also issued a number of guidelines restricting women’s rights.
