People living in southern Alberta are being warned to be prepared for a significant storm to hit the area late Monday night and continue through Wednesday morning.

The expected arrival of the storm has prompted Environment Canada to issue heavy rain warning To a large part of south-eastern Alberta and south-western Saskatchewan.

“The hardest hit areas will be in southeastern Alberta where 50-70 millimeters of rain is expected with up to 80 millimeters possible,” says Tiffany Lizzi, Global Calgary’s chief meteorologist. “That’s more than a month’s rain in 48 hours.”

Below are typical monthly rainfall amounts for May. All three cities are currently under rain warning.

“The warning may be extended to central Alberta, although the current forecast calls for 30 to 50 mm of rain in the Edmonton area, although there is a possibility of more,” said Global Edmonton meteorologist Phil Darlington.

Temperatures are also expected to drop significantly, with highs in Calgary and Edmonton expected to be only between 6 and 9 degrees Celsius on Tuesday.

Typical daytime temperatures in Calgary this time of year are around 15 C.

Colder temperatures mean west of Calgary, precipitation could fall as snow, with 10-15 cm in the forecast.

Temperatures are expected to return to seasonal levels by Thursday.
