2,265 new cases as Ahmedabad, Surat push Covid tally in Gujarat

2,265 new cases were reported in Gujarat on Tuesday COVID-19 The cases, with Ahmedabad and Surat more than double the number reported a day earlier, were the key drivers in raising the tally further. Ahmedabad recorded 1,314 cases on Tuesday, a sharp spike from the 644 reported on January 3.

Health Department Additional Chief Secretary Manoj Agarwal and Health Commissioner Jai Prakash Shivhare were among the positive cases reported on Tuesday. Agarwal said he developed mild symptoms and got himself tested on January 3 with the report coming back negative. “I thought I should get a re-test done today and the report came back positive. I will be in home quarantine till now,” said Agarwal.

In the four days since January 1, 88 students in Surat city tested positive for Covid, including 32 students from 18 schools who tested positive on Tuesday. In entire December 2021, around 90 students had tested positive in Surat city.

On January 3, Dr Kishor Chavda, Vice Chancellor of Veer Narmad South Gujarat University also tested positive and is in home isolation. Surat also reported 424 new cases, which is almost double the number of infections reported on January 3.

Ahmedabad city is witnessing a seven-day average doubling rate of new infections, which is much higher than the state as a whole. In the state, cases are doubling in almost three days, while in Ahmedabad – city and rural jurisdiction combined – it is taking just two days for cases to double, witnessing the sharpest increase of 104 per cent in a single day on Tuesday.

Dr Ashish Naik, Deputy Health Commissioner, Surat said that vaccination is going on all over the state for adolescents of 15 to 18 years, but our teams are facing problem in some Muslim schools but we will look into it. Get them more vaccinated in the coming days.”

Ahmedabad city also reported two more omicron Cases of male and female with no travel history. According to the state government’s daily health bulletin, the state’s Omicron tally now stands at 154, of which 96 have been discharged.

There are 65 micro containment zones in Ahmedabad city including 21 such areas as on Tuesday. The North West region of the city leads the list of micro containment zones with 74 houses being added to the list on Tuesday. On January 3, 129 houses were declared as micro-containment zones.

In other districts, Anand added 70 new cases on Tuesday, followed by Kheda 34, Bharuch 26 and Morbi 24 new cases. All four districts have reported the Omron version last month.

Two patients, one each in Navsari and Bhavnagar, died of the virus, while 18 are on ventilators across the state till Tuesday.
