Commission delegation leaves for Pakistan

The 117th Annual Meeting of the Permanent Indus Commission began in Islamabad. A 10-member team, including three women officers, led by Indus Water Commissioner Pradeep Kumar Saxena left for Pakistan via the Attari-Wagah border to attend the meeting.

The team will hold talks with their Pakistani counterparts in Islamabad from March 1 to 3. The delegation, led by Indus Water Commissioner Pradeep Kumar Saxena, will return on March 4 after three-day talks with the Pakistan team led by neighboring Indus Waters. Right of India on three rivers and Pakistan on three rivers

According to sources, the agenda of the meeting includes Pakistan’s objections to the Pakal Dul (1,000 MW), Lower Kalnai (48 MW), and Kiru (624 MW) hydroelectric projects and some smaller hydroelectric projects in the Chenab basin of Jammu and Kashmir. The delegation will return to India on March 4 via the Attari-Wagah border. It is noteworthy that under the old Indus Water Treaty (IWT) of 1960, India and Pakistan share the waters of six rivers in the Indus basin. Of these, India has full rights over three eastern rivers – Sutlej, Beas and Ravi. Pakistan has right over the western rivers- Chenab, Jhelum and Indus.

The last meeting was held in Delhi

The last meeting of the Permanent Indus Commission was held in New Delhi on March 23-24, 2021. During the last meeting, the Pakistan side had requested India to share information about the design of other Indian hydroelectric projects. Plans are being made to develop them. The Indian side had reaffirmed its commitment to interact more frequently in an effort to resolve the issues through bilateral discussions under the treaty. Earlier, the 2020 meeting by both the countries was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
