The pair started eighth and ninth on the grid, and their two cars collided as they tried to go around the first corner, flying off the track.
Russell was able to leave his car quickly and appeared to be without damage, but Zhou’s car rolled over, prompting Britain to rush to his aid.

Russell also ran to try to help his fellow driver, and to make sure he was okay.
Medics were also there to provide assistance, as they tried to get Zhou out of his car.
Sky Sports has since reported that Zhou was able to eject safely, and his teammate, Alfa Romeo, has confirmed that the Chinese driver is fine.
The 23-year-old is going to the medical center as a precaution after a speeding collision.

After the incident, the race was red flagged, while race officials cleared the track and ensured that Zhou and Guanyu were uninfected.
Race control decided that the race would resume with the same starting grid as qualifying, minus the drivers involved in the accident.
Russell wanted to continue, but after getting out of his car, the FIA has confirmed that he will not be allowed to attend the restart.
This means Russell will fail to finish in the top five of a Grand Prix for the first time this season.
