A senior police officer told News18 on condition of anonymity that the Z+ security cover signifies that the person receiving the protection is at high security risk. “He (Abhishek Banerjee) needs ‘house guards’, dedicated people who will see if any outside force is trying to break into his house. Barricading is required for this purpose,” said the official.
Time and again, the opposition BJP has questioned Abhishek’s security, and called the barricading episode a “drama”. BJP Vice President Dilip Ghosh asked, ‘Why has it been removed now? They had restricted this area for so long. Even we could not go there and preach. People can go outside PM’s house but not his, why? I think they have this internal problem…”
However, TMC general secretary Kunal Ghosh said it was a “sensitive security matter”. “People have seen what happened to Rajiv Gandhi (former PM) when his security was reduced. This person is always the target of the Prime Minister and Home Minister of the country, hence there is a threat to the security. Since the person concerned himself has made the request, we feel that still the security agencies should do everything for his safety.”
