A York Regional Police officer heading into work Wednesday morning was killed in a head-on crash in Markham, sources tell Global News.

York police said emergency crews were called to the area of Major Mackenzie Drive East and Warden Avenue at around 6 a.m. for a report of a two-vehicle crash.

When officers arrived, they learned one driver had been killed, police said.

Police did not release any details about the victim or anyone else who was injured in the crash, but Global News has since learned that the individual killed was a York Regional Police officer.

A memo sent to members from York Regional Police Chief Jim MacSween obtained by Global News confirms that an officer was killed in the collision.
