This will be the first 48-nation World Cup, has grown from the 32-team system used since 1998. There will be 16 groups of three countries. Each team will play two first round games instead of three, and one nation in each group opens against an opponent who may have already played.
The top two teams in each group will advance to the knockout division of 32 nations.
Under FIFA’s plan, the United States will host 60 of the 80 matches, including all matches in the quarter-final round of the knockout stage. It is the first time since 1994 that the United States will host World Cup matches on a men’s side, two years before Major League Soccer’s first season was held.
Mexico will become the first country to host World Cup three different times. Canada is hosting the Men’s World Cup matches for the first time.
