Woman’s father says husband killed her in interreligious marriage

Varanasi Police is planning to send its teams to Bareilly and Roorkee in Uttarakhand to trace a 26-year-old woman who is suspected to have been murdered by her husband.

“On May 17, Sharif had come to our residence and demanded Rs 10 lakh. When I refused to give him the money, he threatened to kill my entire family saying that he had already killed my daughter. Sharif was charged under IPC sections 302 (murder), 386 (extortion by fear of death or grievous hurt to any person), 366 (kidnapping, abducting or abetting any woman to compel her to marry him, etc.), 504 ( A case has been registered under intentional insult). intent to provoke breach of the peace) and 506 (criminal intimidation). The police have also invoked the anti-conversion law against him.

According to the police, they are trying to verify the information shared by Sharif during his interrogation.

“Sharif told us that they attended and got married in 2015 in Bareilly. According to him, his wife had died last year in Roorkee, where he was undergoing treatment for a stomach ailment. We are sending a police team to Bareilly to verify their marriage claim. Assistant Superintendent of Police (Varanasi) Lakhan Singh Yadav said that another team is being sent to Roorkee, where she was undergoing treatment and is being sent to Roorkee to find any record of her death.

Meanwhile, the woman’s father said that his daughter had gone missing in June 2015 and lodged a missing complaint with the police. “At that time, I was not aware that my daughter was in touch with Sharif Hashmi, who lives nearby. I used to go to the police station regularly but they did not give any information about that. A few days later, when I was out of town, I got a call that my daughter was getting married to a Muslim man and if I had any objection to it, I should approach the court. I was shocked by the information and decided not to object,” said the father.

“After a few days, the local police station told me that my daughter has lodged a complaint that she fears for her life from her parents. Knowing this, I decided to break all my ties with him. We then went to Madhya Pradesh,” said the father, after Sharif started making threatening calls to him a year after their marriage.

“Whenever we used to come to Varanasi, he used to come to our house and demand money. He was also pressurizing my daughter for money.”
