Woman, friend make unexpected delivery along I-70 in western Kansas

Wichita, Kan. (KWCH) – This is the last place a Kansas woman would expect to give birth to her new baby.

Beau and Michelle Drexler’s baby, Miles, was not there for three more weeks, when Michelle began having mild contractions on December 4. The plan was to go straight to Roux County Hospital in Plainsville in the pickup of a family friend.

Within minutes of leaving her home in Ellis, Mitchell’s water broke on I-70. Aminda Brunner, who was driving, pulled over and called 911, but baby Miles was determined to be born. On I-70, heading east past the exit 153 sign toward Hayes, where it will come into this world.

As for dad? He felt that he was being made fun of.

“My sister and I were both like, they’re playing a YouTube video or something in the background because it was silent in the background for something other than crying. And then when Aminda woke up and there was a rumble in her voice, it was like, ‘Oh no! We have to go.'” Beau recalls.

“I never would have imagined in my wildest dreams,” Aminda said. “You know giving birth to my best friend’s baby, let alone on I-70 in my truck.”

Miles’s grandmother, Lori Graham, said she still couldn’t believe it.

“When you think about it, you just, it’s just in disbelief that your grandfather was born on the interstate side,” she said.

The family says that both Michelle and Miles are healthy and doing well.
