Whoopi Goldberg Monday claimed the Holocaust was “not about race” as it involved “two groups of white people” and was instead an example of “man’s inhumanity towards man”.
Goldberg made surprising remarks on The View, an ABC show. This stunned her colleagues and caused outrage among the audience.
The panel was discussing a school in Tennessee that had Comic Maus removed from its curriculum because it contained nudity.
Whoopi began by saying: ‘Personally I’m stunned because looking at Mauss’s story I’m surprised it made you uncomfortable.
‘It’s about the Holocaust, killing 6 million people, but it didn’t matter to you. It’s white people who are doing it with white people so you all fight amongst yourselves but…’
Later, she added: ‘Let’s be truthful about it. The Holocaust is not about race. It’s not about the race. It’s not about the race. It’s not about the race. It is about man’s inhumanity towards man. That’s about it.’
Co-hosts Ana Navarro, Joy Behar and Sarah Haines all argued but she continued: ‘But these are two white groups of people? You are missing the point. The minute you turn it into a race, it goes down this alley. Let’s talk about what it is, how people treat each other.’
Among those condemning his comments is a non-profit organization Stop Antisemitism, which tweeted: ‘Newsflash @WhoopiGoldberg. Six million of us were killed, starved and massacred because we were considered a low caste by the Nazis. How dare you ease our trauma and suffering!’
The Auschwitz Memorial in Poland tweeted the TV star with a link to the history of the Holocaust.

Haines tried to point out that the Nazis did not consider Jews to be ‘white’, but this did not resonate with Goldberg.
There was an immediate reaction on Twitter.
“WTF? this is insane. Wasn’t the destruction of 6 million Jews about race??? Will any rock stars or renegade royals now boycott Whoopi Goldberg and/or ABC for this dangerous misinformation?’ Piers Morgan tweeted.
Meghan McCain, a former co-host who left the show last year after feeling marginalized for her conservative views, tweeted: ‘Antisemitism is a cancer and a poison that is increasingly forgiven in our culture and on television going – and enters those places that should shock us all.’
