an employee at weyburnSask.’s, Holy Family Schools Division, has been charged with sexual interference, inviting sexual contact and sexual assault.

According to Weyburn Police, a concerned parent reached out to police and informed them of some inappropriate communication on social media between a local school employee and one of their young children.

Gwen Keith, director of education with the Holy Family Schools Division, said although she currently cannot name the school for confidentiality reasons, she confirmed that the investigation is ongoing.

“We are working with the proper authorities and doing what is appropriate in our lane to investigate,” she said.

When we asked if the employee was still employed with the school division, she said it was personal information.

Keith wants to reassure parents that this is an isolated incident, and that children remain safe within the school.

“I think the most important thing in all of this is that our children are safe. For the people involved – we want to make sure that for the people involved, their privacy is properly taken care of,” she said .

“There’s just too much trauma in this case.”

According to police, the adult male has now been charged with sexual interference, sexual touching and sexual assault and will appear in court on February 28.

Deputy Police Chief Brent VanDeSipe said that social media predators are taking advantage of young children. He advised parents to keep a check on their social media accounts.

“Parents need to talk to their kids, and they should watch their communication on social media,” he said.

“If they notice any changes in their behavior such as their diet, or if they become more aggressive, parents should talk to their children and find out why.”

If found guilty, the accused person can be jailed for up to 14 years.
