West Bengal: Mill worker dies after coworkers pump air ‘for fun’

A 23-year-old worker at a jute mill in Hooghly died on Wednesday, nearly 10 days after his colleagues pumped in compressed air “for fun”.

Police were on the lookout for the accused and registered a case at Bhadreshwar police station.

The family and relatives of deceased Rahmat Ali on Thursday protested outside the Northbrook Jute Mill demanding compensation. Ali used to work as a contract laborer in the mill’s winding department.

The strange incident happened on the morning of 16 November after Ali’s night duty. Police said his associates caught hold of him and filled him with compressed air. Ali fell ill and was admitted to the Chinchira Imambara District Hospital, from where he was referred to a private hospital in Kolkata. He died on Wednesday.

Speaking to local media, Ali’s brother Ajmat Ali said: “Doctors said the liver was severely damaged due to air pressure.” He blamed some of Ali’s associates for the death. Repeated calls to Northbrook Jute Mill for comment did not elicit any response.
