City of Waterloo, Ont. has announced the purchase of an emission-free, automatic lawn mower as it seeks to move towards a green future,

It says it is the first municipality in Canada to include an electric robot in its fleet.

“We are always looking for ways to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and drive the city toward a cleaner and greener future. Automatic mowers reduce our carbon footprint while allowing us to save employees time more efficiently. The way it cuts the grass also helps keep the grass thick and healthy,” said Tim Wolfe, who manages park operations for the city.

Waterloo says it ran a successful trial period before buying the robot, which is said to be quiet day or night with its ability to cut grass rain or shine.

The city says it has purchased the EcoTurf Mover 2000 which can cut up to six acres in one charge.

“The unit has shown its ability to efficiently meet service levels while minimizing our environmental impact,” said Jason Evans, Fleet Services Manager.

It is currently mowing the Laurel Creek Conservation Area cricket ground.

Waterloo says the lawnmower can navigate around objects even when there is an emergency stop switch.
