Water logging, traffic problem in Delhi due to monsoon rains

After the first monsoon rains in Delhi on Thursday morning, several main roads were waterlogged. The Delhi Traffic Police on Thursday issued several advisories on social media after traffic jams along with waterlogging were reported in areas of the city and the National Capital Region.

Areas like Bridge Prahladpur, Sarita Vihar, Tughlakabad, AIIMS, Aurobindo Marg, Dhaula Kuan and Inderlok were waterlogged, disrupting traffic.

Police officials issued a waterlogging warning on the bridge Prahladpur railway underpass. Both carriageways remained closed for the most part of the day and were reopened on Thursday evening.

Dense traffic was seen from Sarita Vihar to Badarpur due to floods in Pul Prahladpur. Waterlogging was reported at a small stretch of Sarita Vihar underpass, which slowed down but did not stop the traffic.

Police advised commuters coming from shooting range direction to take left from Lal Kuan signal and people of Badarpur to take Mathura road.

Meanwhile, waterlogging disrupted traffic near the Barapullah flyover area. Police found that the waterlogging was affecting the traffic going from Lodhi Underpass and AIIMS towards Sarai Kale Khan and DND and directed the drivers to avoid the stretch. Later in the day, traffic in the area returned to normal.

Traffic on the IIT flyover towards Munirka was affected when a heavy transport vehicle broke down. As traffic was affected in South Delhi, officials advised drivers to avoid the Aurobindo Marg route from IIT to Adhchini, Khanpur T point to MB Road route from Tughlaq Fort in both directions and Outer Ring Road from Chirag Delhi in both directions. On Tughlakabad Road, on the Govindpuri side, waterlogging prompted passengers to cross on “thela carts” or hand carts, the owners of which charged Rs 15 for a journey. Waterlogging occurred in three different parts at the intersection of AIIMS.

Ahead of the monsoon season, the traffic police had said that 1,100 personnel, road safety officers (RSOs) and two rapid response teams would be deployed to facilitate traffic. “To deal with all kinds of problems due to waterlogging, 24×7 towing cranes will be available at various places in the city,” Gurgaon Traffic Police said in a statement.

Police also noted that traffic movement was restricted at Anand Parvat T-Point and Zakira Underpass near Inderlok, affected by waterlogging in both directions and from Inderlok via Keshavpuram, Britannia and Azadpur from passengers coming from West Delhi. Urged to turn left towards Ring Road. Square. He also noted that the PWD workers were working on the problem while the Delhi Jal Board pumps were working to extract the water.

Officials also said that traffic on Ring Road was affected by waterlogging in both directions towards Gurgaon and Naraina between Naraina and Moti Bagh and Dhaula Kuan loop under the Dhaula Kuan flyover.

While the Pragati Maidan tunnel was reportedly affected by waterlogging earlier in the day, only a few puddles were seen with normal traffic movement later in the afternoon.

In Gurgaon, traffic jams were reported near Basai Chowk, Sector 4-5 Chowk, IFFCO Chowk and near Khandsa on NH-48 towards Jaipur due to waterlogging.
