Video: Chenab flow blocked by landslide in Himachal’s Lahaul-Spiti; 11 villages in danger of drowning

A major landslide occurred on Friday morning near Nalda village in the tribal districts of Lahaul and Spiti, blocking the flow of Chenab river in the area.

As a result, it has posed a serious threat to the people of 11 villages living under steam in the area.

The district administration has appealed to the people living in low-lying areas near the river to climb to the higher elevations to avoid any human calamity. A team of district administration has been sent to the spot to review the situation.

A lake has formed near Jasrath village, where a house has been submerged, while agricultural land nearby has been damaged. The entire village is under threat, where the volume of the lake is increasing rapidly.

The incident happened on Friday morning when a large part of the hill fell in the Chenab and completely blocked the flow of the river.

The district administration has sought the help of army experts to conduct an aerial survey to organize the flow of water in time, otherwise it may lead to a major disaster in the area.

Deputy commissioner, Lahaul and Spiti, Neeraj Kumar told The Tribune that the evacuation process was underway to take the villagers to safer places. At least 11 villages are in danger due to disruption in the flow of the river.

He said the state government was urged to ask the army to conduct an aerial survey at the earliest.

The DC said that no casualty was reported in the incident.
