Vaccine hesitation biggest threat in overcoming Kovid: Adar Poonawalla

New Delhi, November 17

Serum Institute of India CEO Adar Poonawalla on Wednesday urged all adults to get vaccinated at the earliest, terming vaccine hesitation as the biggest threat in overcoming the COVID-19 pandemic.

He said that 200 crore doses of Kovid-19 vaccine are lying with the states and people should get themselves vaccinated at the earliest.

“The vaccine industry has worked tirelessly to provide adequate stocks for the nation. There are over 200 million doses available with the states today. I urge all adults to get vaccinated as soon as possible. To help overcome this pandemic Vaccine hesitation is the biggest threat now,” Poonawalla said in a tweet.

Earlier in the day, Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya also appealed to all eligible citizens to get vaccinated.

The cumulative COVID-19 vaccines administered in the country has crossed the 113.68 crore mark. About 90 per cent of all vaccine doses offered are serum covishield and close to 10 per cent are Bharat Biotech’s covaccine.

For the first time in India, the number of fully vaccinated individuals against COVID-19 has exceeded the partially vaccinated population.

As per the provisional report at 7 am, the country has given a total of over 113.68 crore doses.

This has been achieved through 1,16,73,459 sessions. Of these, 75,57,24,081 doses were given as first dose and 38,11,55,604 as second dose. The number of fully vaccinated individuals (38,11,55,604) exceeds those given a single dose (37,45,68,477). PTI
