UT Police to review 3% sports quota in recruitment

DGP Ranjan said, “Recently, the daughter of a sub-inspector (SI) Monika Malik, was part of the Indian hockey team, which finished fourth in the Tokyo Olympics 2021. We facilitated her at the police headquarters. I was informed that there is no recruitment in police under sports quota. And yet, we have excellent players in our police force. We want to promote sports culture, so I took up the issue with the administrator The administrator was positive about it.”

The last recruitment under sports quota was in 1997. At least 33 constables, who excelled in hockey, shooting, kabaddi, wrestling, were recruited. Since then, there have been at least a dozen recruitments but players have not been recruited under quota. However, the players were recruited under the general category without giving any benefit to their sports background.

A member of the UT hockey team, which was going to Bengaluru to participate in the All India Police Hockey Championship (December 2 to December 11), said, “Almost all 33 police personnel who were recruited under sports quota in 1997 are now aged, are ineligible to participate. In professional competitions in youth age groups. New players are desperately needed.”

Sources said, “In 2015, there was discussion regarding recruitment under sports quota but nothing happened. Despite all odds, there are about three dozen police personnel including women, who are excelling in sports competitions including All India Police Games, National Championships etc.

Shooter constable retired
Inspector Raj Bala, who won three international shooting events and several national level gold medals, retired from the UT Police on Tuesday. Raj Bala had joined the rank of constable in July 1982. After joining the police force she got involved in shooting sports.

He was promoted to the rank of Inspector in 2020. Raj Bala was the first woman from Chandigarh Police to receive the Commando Badge for the UT Police. She has been working as the Shooting Range Incharge for a long time. She says, “There is a lot of talent in Chandigarh Police. There is a need to promote those cops who are genuinely interested in the sport.”
