UP: Fake investigation against woman who accused MP of rape, non-bailable

A local court in Varanasi has issued a non-bailable warrant against a 24-year-old woman who accused BSP MP Atul Rai of sexual harassment in a forgery case.

The case was registered last November on a complaint lodged by Rai’s brother, alleging that the woman had forged documents to hide her date of birth. Rai, an MP from Mau’s Ghosi, has been in jail since June 2019 in a rape case.

The police, which registered a case of forgery against the woman on the directions of the court, said they sought a non-bailable warrant against her as she “remained missing despite multiple raids”. Station House Officer (Varanasi Cantonment Police Station) Rakesh Kumar Singh said, “The court on Monday issued a non-bailable warrant against the woman.”

On the directions of the court, the police booked the woman and her accomplice under IPC sections 419 (cheating by impersonation), 420 (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property), 467 (forgery of valuable security, will, etc.), FIR registered under 468. Fraudulent intent), 471 (using forged document as genuine) and 120-B (criminal conspiracy).

In 2015, the woman had accused student leader Amartesh Singh alias Sabal of molestation. In 2019, a Mau-based woman made allegations against Atul Rai that the BSP MP was sexually harassing her for almost a year after she moved to his apartment in Varanasi’s Lanka area. She had also alleged that Rai had made a video and threatened to circulate it on social media.

Meanwhile, sub-inspector Girija Shankar, the investigating officer in the forgery case, said that investigation is underway and they are looking for the woman.
