UN Security Council condemns deadly Daesh terrorist attacks in Iraq

The United Nations Security Council on Wednesday strongly condemned the recent terrorist attacks in Iraq that killed or injured dozens. Daesh has taken responsibility.
On 7 December an explosion in Basra killed at least four people and injured 20, and on 3 December an attack in the north of the country killed at least 13.
Security Council members expressed their condolences to the families of the deceased and wished a speedy recovery to the injured. They reiterated their support for “independence, sovereignty, unity, territorial integrity, the democratic process and the prosperity of Iraq”.
He urged all states to “actively” cooperate with Iraqi authorities to bring to justice “the perpetrators, organisers, financiers and sponsors of these reprehensible acts of terrorism”. He stressed that such cooperation is in line with obligations under international law and Security Council resolutions.
Council members “reiterated that any act of terrorism is criminal and unjustified, regardless of their motivation, committed anywhere, whenever and by whom.”
Committing its continued support to Iraq in its fight against terrorism, and in particular Daesh, the Council reaffirmed the need for “all states to fight by all means – in accordance with the Charter of the United Nations and in accordance with international law.” Other obligations, including international human rights law, international refugee law and international humanitarian law – threats to international peace and security caused by terrorist acts.
