The network said Tuesday that longtime Fox News photojournalist Pierre Zakarjevsky had died while reporting in Ukraine.

“It is with great sadness and with a heavy heart that we are sharing the news this morning about our beloved cameraman Pierre Zaccharzewski,” Fox News Chief Executive Suzanne Scott wrote to employees Tuesday morning. “Pierre was killed in Horenka outside Kyiv, Ukraine.”

He had been reporting from Ukraine since February and was with correspondent Benjamin Hall “when his vehicle was hit by an oncoming fire,” Scott said.

Zakarzewski was a veteran war photojournalist who “covered almost every inside story for Fox News from Iraq to Afghanistan to Syria,” Scott said.

“His talent was immense and there was no role he didn’t leap into to help out in the field – from photographer to engineer to editor to producer – and he did it all with tremendous skill under extreme pressure,” Scott said. “He was absolutely committed to storytelling and his bravery, professionalism and work ethic were well-known among journalists at every media outlet.”

“He was wildly popular – everyone in the media industry who has covered a foreign story knew and respected Pierre,” Scott said.

Scott said it was “a heartbreaking day for Fox News Media and for all the journalists who risked their lives to deliver the news.”

Meanwhile, Hall remains in hospital in Ukraine, she told colleagues.

Anton Gerashchenko, adviser to Ukraine’s interior minister, said a Ukrainian journalist, Oleksandra Kuvshinova, also died in the incident.
