Two killed, one injured in shooting near Illinois courthouse, officials say

Two people were killed and another wounded in a shooting Thursday morning near a courthouse in Illinois, officials said.

Kankakee Police Chief Robin Passwater said the deceased were men in their 20s. The third male victim underwent surgery on Thursday afternoon. Passwater said.

“At this time, we believe there is no threat to the community,” he said, adding that the two suspects were in custody.

“Several firearms including a long gun were recovered at the spot,” he said.

Passwater said that while the courthouse in Kankakee, about 60 miles south of Chicago, was open during the shooting, there was a lot of foot traffic in and around the building when the shooting took place.

He did not reveal any possible motive and said investigators were talking to witnesses and looking for others.

NBC Chicago Reported police responded by firing on the south side of the Courthouse at around 9:15 a.m.

“A shooting has occurred at the Kankakee County Courthouse,” the Kankakee County Sheriff’s Office posted on Facebook. “The scene is safe. More information will be available as it becomes available. We are asking everyone to avoid this area as the investigation is ongoing.”

Department officials also posted on Facebook that the courthouse would remain closed on Thursday due to the police investigation.

Schools in Kankaki School District 111 were temporarily put on lockdown. The authorities lifted the lockdown only after noon.

About 26,000 residents live in the city, which is about 60 miles south of Chicago.
