Tripura CPM says BJP workers indulged in political violence after election results

The opposition CPM on Friday accused the ruling BJPThe activists inflicted state-wide political violence on their workers after the results of elections in five states, including Uttar Pradesh, were declared on Thursday.

CPM state secretary Jitendra Choudhary told reporters that celebrations of the BJP’s victory have turned violent at many places with arson in the offices of opposition parties, attacks on political workers and common people and looting of properties.

“Election is a democratic process. No party or coalition will be victorious. It is normal for any party to celebrate victory, even if there are elections in another state…. But the celebration of their victory involved widespread violence. These democratic There cannot be festivals. These are undemocratic and fascist events.

In a letter to Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb, the CPI(M) leader said that till Thursday night there were at least 39 incidents of arson and other attacks in five subdivisions across the state- 22 of them in Sadar subdivision of West Tripura. While ten attacks were reported in Sonamura subdivision, four in Bishalgarh in Sipahijala district, one in Kuarghat and two in Kamalpur subdivision.


Chowdhary said that there have been several incidents of political violence in the last 47 months. “However, this is still unprecedented in a democracy. While the police have taken some action, not a single arrest has been made in any of these incidents,” he said.

The CPI(M) leader sought the Chief Minister’s intervention to ensure speedy action against the culprits and compensation to the victims.

The BJP leader was not available to comment on the allegations.
