Titans switch up playing surface at Nissan Stadium after myriad of injuries in recent years

After using most of the players in the entire league one after the other due to the increasing number of injuries, tennessee titans announced on Tuesday that they are installing a new playing surface for their home ground.

Nissan Stadium Going up is the grass, which has been a new synthetic turf surface since its opening in 1999.

The Titans used 91 players in 2021, the most ever in a non-strike season, and the playing surface at Nissan Stadium has proven to be the most damaging to players in recent years – from 2018 to 2021, The lower part of the stadium had higher injuries than every monofilament synthetic turf in the league.

One reason for this is that Nashville is located in a transitional climate zone, making it more difficult to provide a consistent, durable grass surface, no matter how many times they have replaced and resurfaced the surface.

“Nothing is more important than the health and safety of our players,” Head coach Mike Vrubel said, “We have a lot of issues after a certain part of the season. It’s hard to grow grass. It gets slick. We put down new turf, we try and put down new sod and it’s slick, you guys slip. Let’s see what happened. Those are the real things that I’ve seen during my time here. Our grass surface is not at the level of some of the other grass surfaces (in the NFL). Early in the year, summer, training camp, early season , I can see it’s very consistent. But as the season progresses, and the weather changes, there’s a noticeable difference in field performance.”

The new turf is the same surface used at the team’s practice facility, to which players have responded positively.

“We added this product to the inside of the bubble and … the response has been very positive, very favorable for the surface that the new technology continues to have,” said Vrubel. “Just looking at our practices inside and how they feel and how they react to that product. … We’re excited to be able to add this product to our stadium.”

Team CEO Burke Nihil said, “I think our grounds crew is one of the best in the National Football League.” “Ultimately there is a limit to how much can be done to a natural grass surface in this part of the country. This turf is cutting edge technology and will be a huge improvement in terms of stability and performance.”
