The challenge aims to extend the lifecycle of products such as tires and asphalt shingles, “eliminating a waste stream that is very difficult to manage,” Environment Minister Sonya Savage said at a news conference in Calgary.

The ERA went through a partnership selection process, and all selected partners are required to publicly report their final results.

The 10 companies chosen, which also includes Northstar Clean Technologies, will use their funding to advance their projects – whatever stage they are at.

Northstar CEO Aidan Mills said the company plans to build the largest commercial asphalt shingle processing plant in North America in Calgary as part of its project.

The processing plant — which will be operational in the second quarter of next year — will allow 40,000 tons of shingles to be diverted from landfills and landfills, Mills said. This will allow the company to produce approximately 10,000 tons of asphalt and fiber, and 20,000 tons of aggregate, respectively, all of which will go back to industrial use.
