Des Moines, Iowa, is experiencing a shocking spate of violence, including Monday afternoon’s shooting at a youth center, according to local officials.

“This is a growing and dangerous phenomenon in our country and one that we have seen before and again today in the city of Des Moines,” Mayor Frank Cooney said during a city council meeting on Monday.

There have been at least 10 murders since December, according to the paper, including the police shooting of a 16-year-old.

Police have taken three suspects into custody in connection with Monday’s shooting at a Des Moines, Iowa, youth center.

“We have two people killed, so we’re looking at the most serious charges,” Police Sgt. Paul Parizek told CNN,

One of those affected in Monday’s Des Moines violence is activist Will Kipps, founder of the Starts Right Here center where the shooting took place.

Mr. Keeps, a rapper and activist, has received endorsements for his work from celebrities including Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds.

Last year, Mr. Kipps shared a photo on LinkedIn of the governor visiting him at his home.

Two youths were killed and one person was injured in a shooting Monday at a Des Moines, Iowa, youth center.

Mr. Kipps was taken to hospital in a serious condition and was taken to surgery, KCCI reports,

Des Moines Police Sergeant Paul Parizek says preventing such tragedies goes beyond policing alone.

“We have to get everybody around the table and start finding a solution because the police can’t do it all,” he said. Deandre Smith said his daughter goes to a youth program at Starts Right Here. He called her about the shooting.

Mr Smith said: “It has to stop”.
