Applications are open for the opportunity to become Mayor For a Day in Kingston, this is the first initiative of its kind for the city.

Fifth grade students can apply until June 5 and submit answers to questions asking how they want to improve life in the city. Answers can be given in written or video format.

Depending on the city, the student selected to play the role can expect to tour City HallAttend a meeting and event, take the mayor’s chair and have lunch with the mayor.

Mayor Brian Paterson said, “We’ve heard about different programs like this, but (this) is the first time we’ve done something like this in Kingston.”

“This year is our first ‘Mayor for a Day’ in Kingston. I’m excited about it and look forward to spending time with the winner. “I hope this becomes an annual tradition.”

Patterson said the purpose is to introduce young children to the world of civic life and “learn more about the city.” This initiative is ultimately meant to showcase what it takes to be a mayor, he added.

As part of their application, students are asked to answer a number of questions. These include answering why they want to be mayor for a day, what their first action would be as mayor and what their favorite thing is about living in the city.

Applications can be found online Or be written and submitted to one of the following locations: City Hall, Kingston East Community Centre, Rideau Heights Community Centre, Artillery Park Aquatic Center and Invista Centre.
