A family is in shock after their loved ones were shot dead on Friday.

Courtney Spraggins, 26, is the victim of the murder of an off-duty Huntsville Police Department officer, her family tells WAAY 31.

That officer, 28-year-old David McCoy, is facing a capital murder charge and is lodged in the Madison County Jail without bond.

The Alabama law enforcement agency’s State Bureau of Investigation is leading an investigation into what Huntsville police called an “incident” Friday at Lawsons Ridge Drive.

McCoy is on administrative leave pending HPD’s internal review of the matter in accordance with his policy.

Courtney was a mother of two and pregnant with a baby girl, her family tells WAAY 31.

“I miss your laughter and your smile,” said Spriggins’ sister Megan Nicholl. “We were exactly opposites but we had a bond like no other. I miss you! It’s not fair that you had to leave. Your life was robbed and justice will be done for you.”

The victim’s autopsy will be performed Monday by the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences’ Huntsville Regional Laboratory, according to Madison County Coroner Dr. Tyler Berryhill.

Two sources tell WAAY 31 that McCoy shot a girlfriend in the head inside a parked vehicle, then stabbed her to death, claiming the woman shot herself.

Those sources said the woman recently told McCoy that she was pregnant before the shooting.

The Spriggins family says McCoy knew about the pregnancy.

McCoy reportedly called to say that a woman who appeared to be a suicide victim was sitting in a car in the parking lot of an apartment complex, both sources said.

Text messages on the woman’s phone helped investigators figure out what really happened on Friday morning.

According to law enforcement sources, investigators from the Huntsville Police Department, who answered their off-duty officer’s call, conducted a preliminary interview with McCoy before being able to speak with SBI.

Huntsville police say the Alabama law enforcement agency’s State Bureau of Investigation is leading the investigation.
