“When we got[the first touchdown]we went for two to try to go ahead and punch him. It didn’t work out very well for us,” said Elks coach Chris Jones. “Then we scored again. I knew if we kicked the first and if we kicked the second we would be one point up and then I was hoping we could burn more clocks.

“We took the ball back, we scored and drove the ball to zero and were able to get off the field.”

Cornelius spent five weeks watching the game from the sidelines, pushed down the depth charts by Nick Arbuckle and Trey Ford. Arbuckle traded to the Ottawa Redblacks and Ford on the injury list for a few weeks, Cornelius had to step up and not miss his chance to throw the winning touchdown pass.

Kenny Lawler, 26, got a 10-yard touchdown pass and the Elks won.

Cornelius said, “It was everything you want in a game you know the ball is in your hands.”

“And Kenny is doing his job, it takes all. It wasn’t just me doing that drama. It was everyone making it possible and then he was coming up with a grab in the end zone.”

The Elks took advantage of two big pass interference calls by Alouettes defensive back Wesley Sutton. In all, Alouettes (1-4) accumulated 193 penalty yards during the game.

“It’s a tough one,” said Montreal head coach and GM Danny Macchiosia. “We are 19 ahead, we take out a track play to get the ball back and we have the opportunity to score again and we are offside and there is a turnover on the same game. At that time we were not able to bring this game back.

Locksley ran for two touchdowns. Cornelius threw for 225 yards, scored an interception and won with his only touchdown pass.

Alouettes quarterback Trevor Harris threw for 241 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. Dominic Davis reaches for two touchdowns.

With both wins on the road this season, Jones and Elks know the next step is to win a game at Commonwealth Stadium.

“Hell, it’s been a long time since we’ve won a home game, so that’s hugely important as an organization,” Jones said. “You have to win home matches and we didn’t play well. So it’s not just the fact that we lost the game, we didn’t play well at home. ,

Sherman Baddie ran for five yards for Edmonton’s first touchdown, but Castillo missed his conversion, giving the Elks an early 6–0 lead.

David Cote kicked a 19-yard field goal to reduce Montreal’s deficit to three by the end of the first quarter.

The Alouettes scored three consecutive touchdowns in the second quarter.

Davis added a second one-yard sneak TD in the third quarter, bringing Montreal up 31-12.

Locksley took the Elks back into the game with a run of two yards for a touchdown to open the fourth quarter but Edmonton failed his two-point conversion.

Locksley dropped 10:55 in his second touchdown of the game to bring the score to 31-25 for Montreal.

After a 50-yard pass interference call on Sutton, his second in the fourth quarter, the Elks got into the red zone. Cornelius found Kenny Lawler to take the win with a 10-yard touchdown pass.
