The province’s recycling update will shift the costs of the recycling program from being split between municipalities and waste producers, to instead being paid mostly by those producers. Manufacturers will also take responsibility for collecting and processing most of the recycling in the city. Although the change is due to start on 1 July, changes to London’s curbside waste collection system will not happen until a few months later

A change is needed in the way London collects and processes waste in order to fall in line with standardized recycling programs across the province.

It is set to coincide with the oft-delayed start of London’s green bin programme, which Jay Stanford, the city’s director of climate change, environment and waste management, expects to begin in late 2023.

The launch of the Green Bin program was put on hold last year when supply chain issues prevented the delivery of needed collection trucks. The city has ordered 26 trucks with delivery dates set for half of them this year, but Stanford says they are now waiting to confirm arrival dates for the final 13 trucks.

An overhauled curbside collection system is being proposed in which recycling bins and green bins will be collected on a weekly basis, while trash will be collected every two weeks.

Stanford expects some residents may be concerned about garbage collection only once every two weeks, but says other cities like Toronto and Ottawa have made it work.

Stanford said, “Initially you think – I can’t keep the garbage that long – but when the smelly portion is picked up every week (via the green bins), you quickly realize it’s a manageable amount.” system.”

“This is the environmental thing we need to do, the reforms that are necessary, not only from a climate change perspective, but also from our responsibility with the materials that we handle.”
