Teenager dies after being struck by lightning at Orchard Beach

Orchard Beach, Bronx (WABC) – A teenage boy was killed by lightning during a high-speed, pop-up thunderstorm that struck Orchard Beach late Thursday.

Carlos Ramos, 13, of the Bronx, died at Jacobi Medical Center.

Six others were admitted to the hospital after the incident.

Another 13-year-old, Stacy Saldivar, was among the others who were killed.

Saldivar, who was on the beach with his parents and two siblings, outside the hospital on Friday, said he and his family saw storm clouds, released water and gathered their belongings and tried to escape the rain. They were running for a while, when the lightning struck. In front of him

“I died and then I was trembling and my mouth started bleeding,” Saldivar said. “It was the man who was giving me the shiver.”

Saldivar said his father shouted for help.

She said she was told that lightning struck her in front of her, but miraculously left no mark on her body.

“Like a little tingle that really hurts a lot,” Saldivar said. “I feel lucky to still be alive.”

Saldivar said that she and her family were not on the beach with Ramos and that they did not know each other.

The storm released heavy rain and brought thunder and lightning, forcing lifeguards to clear the beach.

But many people got trapped in that storm.

In addition to Ramos and Saldivar, a 41-year-old man was among those killed; a 33-year-old woman; a 14-year-old boy; a 12-year-old girl; And a 5 year old boy.

Everyone was taken to the hospital. Everyone is expected to survive.

Ralph Gonzalez said, “A lightning struck, and next thing you know the cloud came over us and the lightning started to fall around us.”

“You can’t rationalize it. It’s just Mother Nature, if you want to call it that.”

Thunderstorm accompanied with scorching heat hit the tri-state region on Thursday, the heat is likely to continue till Friday.

Lightning has injured 17 people in New York City since 2001, not including Thursday’s incident.

Across the country, lightning struck six more people this year, including A 70-year-old man on the golf course in Westhampton, New Jersey.
