Suspect in critical condition after police shooting in Bronx

The Bronx (WABC) — A car chase that spanned two cities ended with a police shootout Saturday night.

Police say the shooting took place in the Grand Concourse section at 161st Street and Summit Avenue, but the incident actually began after they received a call about a car break-down in Manhattan.

Officers initially arrived on the scene at 149th Street and Convent Avenue in Hamilton Heights to investigate a car break-in.

Officers said that once they were working the scene, they saw a car driving recklessly.

Police chased the reckless driver and ended up in the Bronx, where they arrested a man in the car.

Authorities say another suspect fled into a marshy area near the Major Deegan Expressway. A few minutes later, the suspect pointed a weapon and at police.

“At this time, members of Precinct 3-0 engage this individual in an exchange of gunfire. After this exchange of gunfire, the individual moves into the marshy area right here next to Major Deegan and another exchange of gunfire ensues. —is provided,” said NYPD Patrol Chief John Chell.

The police station chief said that the attacker was shot in the head and leg. The 39-year-old is known to police and is in critical condition at a local hospital.
