Summons issued to Gulberg’s witnesses in investigation against Teesta Setalvad, Sreekumar, Sanjeev Bhatt

The Ahmedabad Detection of Crime Branch (DCB) on Friday summoned at least 14 witnesses in the Gulbarg trial, directing them to appear at 11 am on Saturday. FIR Due to which Teesta Setalvad and retired DGP RB Sreekumar were arrested.

Former IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt has also been made an accused in the FIR lodged on June 25.

Summons, issued under section 160 of CrPC, which empowers police officers to require the presence of witnesses, a copy of which was obtained by Indian ExpressRead: “With this notice it is informed that the investigation of FIR u/s 468, 471, 195, 211, 218 and 120(b) of IPC at DCB Police Stations is going on for which your statement to be taken Is your presence on 02.07.2022 at 11 AM at Crime Branch, Gaikwad Haveli, Ahmedabad.

Following the FIR, the government had announced a special investigation team to probe criminal conspiracy and forgery charges against former DGP RB Sreekumar, activist Teesta Setalvad and former IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt. Setalvad and Sreekumar are on police remand till Saturday.

The FIR was registered just 24 hours after the Supreme Court delivered its verdict to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi Clean chit for 2002 Gujarat riots in appeal filed by Zakia Jafri, wife of former Congress MP Ahsan Jafri. The FIR is based on extensive citations of the Supreme Court judgment and its annexures, and mentions the period of “incident of crime” between January 1, 2002 and June 25, 2022.
