Steve Bruce won’t give up fight at Newcastle

Newcastle United manager Steve Bruce says it is not in his nature to walk away from the fight and when he is disappointed by a poor start to the season, he is determined to right the ship and defend his place in the Premier League.

Newcastle are yet to win a game this season and are second on one point after four games, and the 60-year-old Bruce is under increasing pressure.

“My family thinks I’m a little sick because when you’re up against it I don’t really think about (walking away),” Bruce told reporters ahead of their league match against Leeds United. Later on Friday.

“I want Newcastle to be at the top of the league so that’s frustrating but I don’t think about, ‘Oh the noise is too bad, go away Steve.’

“It’s not in my nature to walk away from something when we’re in a fight.”

Bruce said he was also disappointed with the club’s recruitment policy, with the permanent signing of Willock – already on loan at St James’ Park – his only significant business in the transfer window.

“Don’t you think I need a better player?” He asked. “Don’t you think I need a better team to choose from? Don’t you think I want the ability to compete at the top end of the transfer market? It’s not possible, so I have to accept it and do my best at the moment.” There is work to be done. There is frustration for all concerned, and I am the same. “It’s not great, I understand it, but there we are.

“The challenge at times is just ticking off and making sure the club stays where it is and we maintain our Premier League status.”
