SP’s Azam Khan and Nahid Hasan, who are contesting from jail, win UP elections – India Times Hindi News

Samajwadi Party’s Azam Khan and Nahid Hasan, both of whom have won their respective seats while in jail in the 2022 Uttar Pradesh assembly election, show official results.

According to the Election Commission website, Khan, a former Uttar Pradesh cabinet minister and nine-time MLA, won the Rampur seat against BJP’s nearest rival Akash Saxena (Honey) by a margin of over 55,000 votes. According to the Election Commission, Khan got 1.31 lakh (or 59.71 per cent) of the total votes, while Saxena got 76,084 (or 34.62 per cent) votes. He is currently lodged in Sitapur jail on several charges including theft, criminal intimidation and land encroachment.

A total of nine candidates were in the fray from the Rampur assembly seat in the 2022 state elections. In Kairana in Shamli district, SP’s Nahid Hasan registered his third assembly election victory by defeating Mriganka Singh of BJP by over 25,000 votes, according to the Election Commission website.

Hasan got 1.31 lakh (or 54.16 per cent) votes against Singh’s 1.05 lakh (or 43.46 per cent) in this seat, where eight contenders were in the fray. Hassan was arrested on January 16 this year at Kairana Kotwali in a 2021 case under the UP Gangsters and Anti-Social Activities (Prevention) Act and has been in jail since then.

The BJP retained power in Uttar Pradesh after the 2022 assembly elections, winning most of the state’s 403 seats and is once again set to continue the Yogi Adityanath-led government.
