Special weather statement issued for London as ‘significant’ storms expected over the holiday weekend | globalnews.ca

Environment Canada officials on Monday issued a special weather statement for London, Ontario and Middlesex County, advising of “significant winter storms” expected to hit the region just in time for Christmas.

According to the advisory, which is also in effect for the rest of Southern Ontario, rain or snow in the form of snow is expected to begin late Thursday, with rain expected in many areas through early Friday.

The advisory states that the mercury is expected to drop rapidly between Friday afternoon and Saturday morning, “leading to a possible flash freeze for places with rain.”

Environment Canada’s current multi-day forecast for London shows a high of 8C on Friday and an overnight low of -8C on Saturday.

The advisory continues, “The rapid drop in temperature will be accompanied by potentially damaging winds as well as snow which may be heavy at times.”

“Blizzards possible late Friday night into the weekend for areas below Lake Huron and Georgian Bay.”

Environment Canada officials say a “multi-day lake effect snow event” is expected over the weekend for areas east of the Great Lakes.

Early Forecast for London Wind conditions will be cloudy with a 60 per cent chance on Christmas Eve and a high temperature of -7C, with periods of snow and overnight lows of -10.

Skies are expected to be cloudy on Christmas Day with a 60 percent chance of gusts of wind and a maximum temperature of -7 degrees Celsius.

Additional details are expected closer to the holiday weekend.
