Prosecutors say Father of Two Matthew Tester went with his friend Steven Butler to confront a former girlfriend’s ex-boyfriend and was repeatedly rammed by a car and killed as the confrontation escalated.

A second victim, Lee Waring, was also dropped and seriously injured following a confrontation between two ex-lovers who both dated a woman named Ilse Showman.

The incident that unfolded at an M&S car park in Walton-on-Thames earlier this year was described by prosecutors to a jury at Guildford Crown Court, where 27-year-old Shan Mir denied charges of murder and attempted murder. did.

The court was told that Meir was dating Ms. Showman, but the pair broke up and the defendant believed that one of her past boyfriends, Steven Butler, was responsible for the breakup of her relationship.

Meir arranged to meet Mr. Butler at the Superstore car park to talk about his theory – but Mr. Butler decided to make sure allies, Matthew Tester and Lee Waring, were present in case of trouble.

‘ Mir changed his appearance again – he changed his clothes, shaved his head, and he got rid of the car too. He was questioned later that day.

The first thing he told the police was that his car had been stolen. He said so over and over again. He was questioned by the police and he replied “no comment”.

He later admitted that he was the driver. When he saw the evidence he could do nothing but accept it.

‘He claimed he was acting in self-defense when he was driving into those two men – if you are being attacked, you can use reasonable force to defend yourself.

Mr Ivers said, ‘It was clearly not self-defense to drive two people away from your car.

The prosecutor told the court how Mir’s then girlfriend, Ms Showman, wanted to take a break from the relationship from November 2020 to April this year.

‘Ms Showman had known Steven Butler for years and said she had a brief relationship with Mr Butler before [her and Mir’s] Relation.

‘Whatever the reason, it meant that their relationship had started to deteriorate and she wanted to take a break. On April 20, Mir removed some of his belongings from his house.

Shortly thereafter, Meir begins texting Mr. Butler and Mr. Butler’s girlfriend, prompting the men to agree to meet at the Marks and Spencer car park.

The jury heard that both Mr. Tester and Mr. Waring, the murder victims, were friends of Mr. Butler, and that both friends were working on a nearby scaffolding at the time of the incident.

Mr Ivers continued: ‘There was an altercation between Meir and Mr Butler – Mr Butler punched the defendant. Mir fell to the ground and Mr Butler followed suit. Mr. Tester and Mr. Waring went to Mir and said “Just leave him [Mr Butler] Alone, it has nothing to do with you”.

‘They left,’ said Mr. Ivers, and then he drove.

Judge Jonathan Black heard that Joshua Irwin, who was working on a nearby scaffold, had been alerted to the incident by the sound of a revving engine.

Mr Ivers explained: ‘He heard an effect. They both got injured. People were screaming. He saw Mir upside down on Mr Waring.

‘Mr Butler’s hands were on the side of the car and he tried to get the bodies out of the way. He managed to drag them behind some boulders.

‘ Mir again shouted from the car: “Look, you are not so f**king king now you are”.

’ He later sent Butler a text message, saying, “Glad that all were handled in a civilized manner.”

The court heard that Mr Waring was treated on the spot and taken to hospital where he had several operations on his face, one wound on his chin and another on his chest.

Mr Tester was treated at the scene, but died of a head injury, a post-mortem examination confirmed.

The jury was shown police body camera video that revealed how Mir claimed his car had been stolen, telling officers he was ‘astonished’ by the arrest.

He told the officers: ‘My car has been stolen and you are arresting me for murder? You are taking a lot out of your head.

He declined to comment on any questions asked to him once he was taken for interview by the officials.

At the time of the attack, neighbors revealed that Mr Tester, an avid scooter enthusiast, was a family man who was devoted to his two teenage daughters, Maddie and Pippa.

The jury heard that before the confrontation, Meir messaged Mr Butler on Instagram, saying: ‘Hi, I just wanted to ask you why it’s okay to talk to my bird and tell him he broke your heart Is.

‘Something that has been bothering me for some time. It’s just a disrespect. Think I’ll tell your girl tbh.’

Meir then sent a screenshot of the conversation between himself and Iss – which he interpreted as fraud – to Georgina Burt, Mr Butler’s then-partner. After this, Mr Butler said: ‘Did you want to speak to me personally about this? You have just ruined my life.’

Mr Butler told the court: ‘Some things may have turned out differently on the message and I wanted to talk to him to talk about it.

‘I deleted the message that evening (attack) because I was confused and scared and thought I was going to get in trouble for punching her.

‘Those two (sic) were like fathers to me. He loved me like a son. They came with me to watch my back, just in case Mir had brought a van full of miscreants. I didn’t know what I was doing.’
