One person was killed and at least 13 others were injured in a candlelight shooting near Houston on Sunday night, a sheriff said.
Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said the shooting happened around 6:40 p.m. when about 50 people gathered to celebrate life near the North Market Loop in Baytown, about 25 miles west of Houston.
“While they were releasing the balloon into the air, the vehicle came,” he said. “About the same time they opened fire in the crowd.”
Gonzalez said one of the injured was taken to hospital by helicopter. He said that a small child is said to be among the injured.
Gonzalez said it was too early to know whether the shooting could be gang related.
“Those pills don’t have eyes or anything, so it puts everyone at risk,” Gonzalez said.
A witness, Sidney Williams, told KTRK-TV that “people were screaming and running towards their cars.”
