A shelter-in-place order in effect for some Harris County, Texas residents has been lifted after Sunday’s anhydrous ammonia leak. Harris County Public Health Department,

A leak at a warehouse in Katy forced authorities to ask nearby residents to stay indoors on Sunday morning because of health risks.

“If anyone is experiencing eye irritation, burning sensation in the eyes, burning sensation in the nose or throat, difficulty in breathing, we are asking you to go to the nearest emergency center for care,” Dr. Erica Brownthe director of Harris County Public Health’s Community Health and Wellness Division said earlier Sunday.

According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, anhydrous ammonia is a pungent gas with suffocating fumes that is used as a fertilizer.

Nirjal means “without water.” If anhydrous ammonia mixes with water in the human body, it can cause rapid dehydration and severe burns.

Symptoms of anhydrous ammonia exposure include difficulty breathing; irritation of the eyes, nose, or throat; burning or blisters.

People who get anhydrous ammonia in their eyes should flush the eyes with plenty of water for 15 minutes.

Exposure to high concentrations of anhydrous ammonia can result in death.

As of Sunday morning, no injuries had been reported in connection with the leak at the Harris County Fire Marshal’s Office Tweeted,
