she promised her husband to keep his tree farm going

WOOSTER, Ohio – For Rita Dush, Christmas trees hold many meanings.

“Managing the land, beauty and happiness for families,” said Dush, owner of Pine Tree Barn in Wooster.

In the barn, there is a list of different types of trees that take a while to grow. “Normally it takes us about eight years to harvest,” said Brad Moore, nursery manager at Pine Tree Farms.

Choosing the right tree also takes time. Once customers choose, they cut them down, shake the pines and wrap them to go. Although the tree may last for a month or two, the joy lasts forever.

“It’s the spirit of Christmas – you see families happy. You see little kids who are happy,” Moore said.

It is not just the wonderful experiences and memories that stay with the customers. For Dush, the Pine Tree Barn has a deep meaning.

She had lost her husband two years ago today. Roger and Rita built the pine tree 40 years ago from the roots of Roger’s family farm, Yuletide Tree Farm. They never thought it would be as big as it is today, but they made a promise to each other.

“We knew we weren’t going to live forever, and we both wanted some ranch to continue. So I’m still doing it, and I’m sure if I were in his place and he was here, He would still be doing it,” Rita said.

And so every smile she sees on the farm brings her joy.

“It’s wonderful, absolutely wonderful, especially with the little kids, but they’re smiling and happy and bouncing,” Dush said.

Rita sees the work of eight years, when Roger was with her, brought to life.

“It gives me a reason to be, I miss him,” she said.
