Saskatoon store opens ‘Library of Things’ to encourage sustainable living Globalnews.ca

A sustainable living The store in Saskatoon has created a space for residents to share items that may not be used as often.

‘The Better Good’ on Broadway Avenue not only has clothing and accessories, but a ‘Library of Things’ on the lower level.

“It’s a library, but instead of books, it’s just stuff,” Meg Dovart, coordinator of the Library of Things, told Global News.

“Pretty much anything you might only use twice a year or something you want to try before you really invest and buy it. Now [the] That’s the kind of stuff that gets put in your storage room that you really don’t use very often,” she said.

Some of the items in this library include games, puzzles, kitchen equipment, tools, sports equipment, and camping gear.

Similar to a library, residents can sign up for an account and find the item they want to borrow through an online catalog. Items can also be reserved ahead of time and renewed as and when required.

Library of Things is a volunteer-led initiative. Dorvaart was recruited by the owner of The Better Good. The Library of Things aims to encourage sustainable living by reducing waste and saving residents some money in their wallets. It welcomes donations.

“If we think about all the things we have in our homes that we only use twice a year and multiply that by how many people are in town, if we can reduce that amount, all of them Things will just be less stuff in the landfill at the end of the day,” explained Dorvaart.

“But then it also helps people financially because you can borrow these things instead of buying them full price and keeping them in your home.”

For Alexa Pierce, a library member, the initiative has brought a sense of community. Most of the items in the library were donated by Saskatoon residents.

“Not everyone needs the same item that we might only use once or twice,” Pierce explained. “It’s people who are contributing to the community and then allowing other people to access things that they might not be able to access without this kind of resource,” she said.

The library runs The Better Good on Saturdays between 1 PM and 4 PM.
