Water with algae may appear shimmery, frothy, and resemble pea soup, and may appear bluish-green, bright blue, gray, or tan.

The province said this can happen during warm, calm weather in places where there is shallow, calm or slow-moving water.

The algae bloom can last up to three weeks, and the wind around lakes and reservoirs can push them off.

The ministry said that direct contact with or drinking water can cause redness of the skin, sore throat, nausea, cramps, diarrhea and vomiting.

People are also being warned against eating fish and shellfish from water where the flowers are present, saying that the internal organs should not be eaten.
