Karachi: Adviser to the Prime Minister on Commerce and Investment Abdul Razak Dawood on Wednesday announced that South Korean tech giant Samsung Electronics, in a joint venture with a local company, will set up its TV line-up plant in Pakistan.
Abdul Razak Dawood said on Twitter, “I am informed that Samsung Electronics is in the process of setting up its TV line-up plant in Karachi in association with R&R Industries.”
“This [plant] Will become operational in the fourth quarter of 2021 and is expected to produce 50,000 units annually,” he said.
He said the joint venture is a testament to the commerce ministry’s “Make-in-Pakistan policy for industrialization through rationalization of input cost and other incentives”.
In July, the South Korean company signed a deal with Lucky Motor Corporation to start manufacturing its phones in Pakistan.
Samsung’s decision to assemble phones in Pakistan was a sign of the success of the Mobile Device Manufacturing Policy (MDMP) launched by the government in June 2020.
The policy’s vision was clear that by 2022, 80% of all mobile phones sold in Pakistan should be manufactured locally.
In August last year, Prime Minister Imran Khan had announced that the government was strictly following the Make-in-Pakistan policy to promote export-oriented industrialization in the country.
