Emperor Prithviraj has been criticized by many for the huge difference (29 years) between the ages of the two leads. Chillar told the defense of difference indianexpress.com“I would like to point out that our characters (Prithviraj and Sanyogita) also had an age difference. It doesn’t matter who is older than whom, it doesn’t matter whether the woman or the man is older, the artist must be appropriate. When you’re an actor, you have to look like the character, whether the character is younger or older than your actual age.”

Indian Express Film critic Shubhra Gupta gave the film 2 stars and wrote, “What Chandraprakash Dwivedi has done is to perpetuate the legend so that it harmonizes with the dominant national mood. Prithviraj is representative of an India when he was ancient, It was pure, unpolluted. How did a director who has also made the astonishingly subversive ‘Mohalla Assi’ achieve this switcheroo? (Dwivedi says it’s his obsessive project, and he’s been there for a decade or more) Trying to get it off the ground). Or is it just a question of being expedient?”
