SAD, AAP candidates pay obeisance at dargah in memory of Indira’s killers

During their election campaign, Shiromani Akali Dal candidate from Dera Baba Nanak, Ravi Karan Singh Kahlon and Aam Aadmi PartyK Gurdeep Singh Randhawa on Saturday paid obeisance at Gurdwara Yadde-Shaheedan, built in memory of the assassins of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, in Agwan village of Gurdaspur.

Dera Baba Nanak is represented by Punjab Deputy CM Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa. One of the killers Satwant Singh belonged to village Agwan and the gurdwara is being looked after by his nephew Bhai Sukhwinder Singh Agwan. Every year on 6 January, the death anniversary of the killers is celebrated in this Gurudwara. Sukhwinder Singh is a former sarpanch and is associated with Akali Dal.

“I got the reins of honor from the family of respected Satwant Singh. I will be grateful for this honour,” reads Gurdeep Singh Randhawa’s Facebook post.

SAD’s Kahlon also made a similar post on Facebook. Indira Gandhi’s two Sikh bodyguards Beant Singh and Satwant Singh opened fire on the Congress leader on 31 October 1984, killing him on the spot. Beant Singh was shot by the police officers on the spot, while Satwant Singh was arrested and later hanged along with Kehar Singh on January 6, 1989.
