A candidate to lead the United Conservatives of Alberta has brought on a high-profile former Confederate politician as campaign chair.
Rebecca Schultz posted a video on Twitter on Friday in which she is speaking with Rona AmbroseFormer Conservative Leader of the Opposition, Cabinet Minister, and Alberta Member of Parliament.
“I have a lot of respect for him, a lot of trust in him,” Ambrose said of Schultz in the video.
“I’ve known him for years and he’s a staunch conservative—exactly what we need to run this province.”
Schultz, a Calgary-Shaw legislator, wrote on Twitter that Ambrose “knows what it takes to unite and lead a party.”
She said in the video that Albertans are worried that recent economic progress could be derailed if New Democrats are elected in next spring’s provincial election.
Before stepping down to take the leadership, Schulz was the provincial child services minister.
Travis Toes and Rajan Sawhney have also given up their cabinet positions to run for leadership. Other candidates include Danielle Smith and Brian Jean, former leader of the Wildrose Party.
The United Conservatives are to elect a new leader on October 6 to replace Premier Jason Kenny.
