Rickshaw driver, accomplice arrested for allegedly raping woman, daughter in Lahore

Chung police on Monday arrested a rickshaw driver and another man for the gang-rape of a woman and her teenage daughter on Lahore Development Authority (LDA) Avenue in Lahore.

According to sources close to the developments, the police today arrested a suspect, identified as Umar Farooq, a rickshaw puller. Sources said the suspect’s criminal record shows that he was earlier arrested in two rape cases last year and in 2018 in Lahore and Okara respectively.

Meanwhile, raids are on to arrest the second suspect, police said. Shortly after, another suspect Munsib was also arrested, he said.

Chung police had earlier today registered an FIR against the two men under section 376 (punishment for rape) of the Pakistan Penal Code on the complaint of the woman.

According to the FIR, a copy of which is available with don.comThe 35-year-old woman told the police that she and her 15-year-old daughter had reached Lahore from Vehari by bus around 10 pm on Sunday. She said she was greeted by a green rickshaw at the Thokar bus terminal to go to her sister’s house in Officers Colony of the Sadar Cantonment Board.

She was quoted in the FIR as saying that the rickshaw puller and another person in the vehicle took them to a secluded place on LDA Avenue and raped her and her daughter.

The woman said that she and her daughter started screaming after seeing the light of a car that had stopped near the spot, upon which the rickshaw driver and the other suspect fled leaving their vehicle behind. He said the suspects took his mobile phone and Rs 5,000 in cash with him.

Meanwhile, the woman said, hearing her cries someone called the police and later the police reached the spot.

She said she would be able to identify the suspects if they were produced before her as per the FIR.

Later, Lahore Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) Ghulam Mahmood Dogar issued a statement saying that an investigation had been launched and the police had confiscated the rickshaws of the suspects.

He said teams have been formed to arrest the suspects and evidence has been collected from the spot.

The CCPO said the victims would be taken to the hospital for medical examination.

Punjab Chief Minister Usman Buzdar also took cognizance of the incident and sought a report from the CCPO.

He directed to arrest the suspects within 48 hours and make every effort to bring justice to the victims.
