“We are helping Congress time and again to win its predicted candidates in Rajya Sabha, Speaker, Vice President and Speaker elections as AIUDF is a member of UPA. This time, we have asked for a scope in the Rajya Sabha,” said Aminul Islam, general secretary of AIUDF.
He and another general secretary of the party, Karim Uddin Barbhuiya, went to the much-awaited meeting with the Congress high command.
Sources close to the development said the first meeting is scheduled between AIUDF leaders and two AICC general secretaries Jitendra Singh and KC Venugopal. Singh is the Congress general secretary in-charge of Assam.
Islam said that despite repeated invitations from the Assam PCC to resolve the issue, he has decided to discuss the matter with the high command. Barbhuiya said that his demand is just.
Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president Bhupen Bora was hopeful that the opposition parties would present a unanimous candidate.
“Assam PCC has submitted names of Congress leaders seeking candidature for Rajya Sabha elections to AICC. We are hopeful that a decision on the opposition candidate will be taken by Sunday evening.

Though expected to be the first choice, the name of tea community leader and former Union minister Paban Singh Ghatovar disappeared from the list of probable candidates for the Congress.
Congress insiders said senior state Congress leaders Dwijen Sarma and Bobita Sharma are among the contenders.
Voting will be held on March 31 for 13 Rajya Sabha seats, including two in Assam.
